First Snow

When I think of the first snow,
The sky is bright, and filled with stars,
The full moon shining on the frozen land
Which glowed brightly in the starlight.
The stream is covered in ice,
which is dark as an endless void,
and the waterfalls frozen into pillars of shimmering frost.
The ground was covered in snow,
the tracks of a deer breaking the sheet of white.
The arctic fox dives into the snowy landscape,
Its graceful leaps ending in landing headfirst.
The snowy owl screeches and hoots,
its wings blocking out the moon.
The arctic hare dives for cover, burrowing into the snow,
As the owl swoops downward, talons outstretched.
The first snow means shelter for some prey.
It means chilling winds and scarce food for some predators.
But for me it means building snowmen
And snuggling with my family by the fireplace
And a cup of hot cocoa
And a steaming bowl of stew.

Wildfire
